Since 2019, short texts about specific vessel types have gradually been added. With regard to these texts and the filter panel terms in the CERAMICA image database it is important to note that we cannot guarantee that the German, French and English translations of these terms are correct or that everyone would use them in exactly the same way. Too vast are the differences in the national, cultural and regional specialist terminologies in the fields of archaeology, European ethnology, history of art, cultural history and craftsmanship. Cultural areas that have different ceramic inventories will generally not have developed a shared terminology, which causes considerable difficulty when it comes to translating the names of certain objects. There is no uniform nomenclature for the French and German speaking parts of Switzerland, and there are also differences between them and their neighbouring regions in France and Germany. Moreover, many areas in Switzerland have a severely limited vocabulary with regard to pottery and ceramic vessels (cf. Schweizerisches Idiotikon<\/a>). All this must be taken into consideration when using the database. However, the fact that CERAMICA CH is an image database has an important levelling effect: since all objects are recorded photographically, they ultimately speak for themselves!<\/p>\n
