Pottery specialists distinguish between the following pottery categories:
- ‘Ceramics’ is the umbrella term for all objects made of fired clay
- It is subdivided into ceramic vessels, stove tiles, architectural ceramics, technical or engineering ceramics and other ceramic objects.
- Depending on the degree of vitrification that occurs during the firing process, ceramic vessels are usually divided into the following types of pottery: earthenware, faience (earthenware with a lead-tin glaze), creamware (or any other white industrial ware) , stoneware and porcelain.
