Dimpled decoration is a type of impressed decoration known only from the wares produced at Langnau in the Emmental valley in the Canton of Bern. The characteristic pattern was used between c. 1732 and 1750 mainly to decorate spouted jugs with bucket handles, butter churns and wash basins. The decoration consisted of rows of round impressions made in the clay while it was still soft using some sort of rounded or spherical implement.

Butter churn, Switzerland, Canton of Bern, Langnau, Workshop 1, Hand 4, c. 1734-1746.

The technique was mainly used to decorate handles, but bands of dimpled decoration can also be found on the walls of butter churns.
