Potter’s clay mixed with water to form a slurry, which is used to cast pottery in plaster of Paris moulds (slip-casting), as an adhesive to attach various parts to a vessel before it is fired (e.g. handles, spouts or feet), or for decorating a vessel (slipware). Diluted even further, slip can be used to coat the entire vessel (slip coating). The wet clay residue that accumulates on the potter’s hands during throwing and is then wiped off into a separate box or basin is also called slip.
