The Swiss faience and refined white earthenware producers’ main competitors included various manufactories in south-western Germany. Because of the unsatisfactory production conditions in Switzerland, particularly in the German-speaking part of Switzerland from the 1820s to the 1840s, the German companies had somewhat of a “monopoly”, as their products probably only had to compete with a limited local supply.

They included the Baden manufactories in Zell am Harmersbach (from 1794, changed hands several times) and Hornberg (1817–1912, today Duravit Sanitärkeramik) and the Württemberg companies in Schramberg (1820–1882, from 1829 under the name Uechtritz & Faist, 1883–1911 as Villeroy & Boch, and from 1912 as Schramberger Majolika Fabrik) and numerous other small localities in southern Germany (on the places of manufacture mentioned see: Kybalová 1990, 121–126; Simmermacher 2002; Kronberger-Frentzen 1964; Schüly 2000. The competition, which in some cases was probably overwhelming, is also reflected in the reports on the Bernese industrial fairs of 1848 and 1857 (Frei 1951; Frei 1952).
The most important refined white earthenware manufactories to the north of Switzerland (with changes after Brandl 1993, 22).
